Project overview

Working with London Borough of Croydon and funded by the Department of Education, we have installed four vibrant planters to help reduce surface water flood risk at local school, Greenvale Primary.

Goal

The primary goal of this project is to reduce the risk of surface water flooding at Greenvale Primary School while simultaneously creating interactive and educational spaces that inspire environmental responsibility among students.

Scope

The installation features included rainwater planters, cloud inlets, a gabion basket wall, channel drains and gullies.

Challenges

Integrating a sustainable flood management system into a primary school environment, while balancing aesthetic considerations with functionality, was a significant consideration of the project. The SuDS planters had to be both effective in reducing flood risk and seamlessly fit within the school’s existing outdoor spaces.

Solutions

Our SuDS planters are a sustainable flash flood and stormwater management solution with an internal water reservoir and slow release drainage system. The installation features included rainwater planters, a gabion basket wall, channel drains and gullies.

The project was designed with both functionality and engagement in mind. By working closely with Greenvale Primary School staff and students, the design was adapted to meet the school’s preferences and to be playful and fun.

Impact

The new AquaPlanters help to capture and store rainfall, resulting in improved water quality and quantity while taking the pressure off the main drainage systems. The green spaces also provide amenity to the school grounds and enhance biodiversity.

Focused on fostering an environmentally conscious generation, our planters are adding new green and engaging spaces to school grounds and teaching the students how to care for their environment in a sustainable way.

Working with the school and involving them in the design process resulted in the pupils helping to inspire the designs, creating fun and thoughtful moments for them whilst also affording them a sense of ownership.
