Our philosophy

Turning the grey green

At Meristem Design, we transform hard and grey city spaces into places that support people and the environment.

But creating meaningful landscapes comes with responsibility.

The decisions we make about materials, planting, transport and maintenance all have environmental and social consequences.

When it comes to the choices we make, from how we design and build, to how we travel to site, treat our team, and support local communities, our philosophy is rooted in doing the right thing for people and the planet.

We see sustainability as an ongoing responsibility. It’s about making informed choices, questioning standard practice and continually improving how we design, build and care for landscapes.

Our story

Our Founders

Meristem Design was founded by David and Habib through a shared passion for the environment, plants and reminder that cities can – and must – work better with nature.

Our Work

What started as a belief in doing things differently has grown into a practice delivering rain gardens, SuDS Planters, parklets and other green infrastructure across the UK.

Our Name

Our name, Meristem, reflects growth, regeneration and potential – the same principles that guide our work today. Our shared passion and dedication drives the team.

What makes us different?

  • We do not use plastic plants – ever. This is a non-negotiable for us.

  • We work closely with suppliers to reduce plastic and unnecessary packaging if feasible.

  • We specify biodegradable planting pots wherever possible.

  • We do not use any chemicals on our living walls.

  • Maintenance teams use electric vehicles at every opportunity.

  • When the team travel to sites, active travel and public transport are prioritised.

Our people matter

We know that sustainable places are created by supported, valued and happy people.

How we look after our team:

Why greening matters

Greener cities are better, happier cities. The evidence is clear:

Improved wellbeing

Green spaces reduce stress and support mental health

Healthier environments

Plants filter air and lower pollution levels

Better workplaces

Green elements boost focus, job satisfaction, and productivity

Lower costs

Less absenteeism, more engagement, and reduced presenteeism

Our job is to help cities work better, by making nature part of the plan, not an afterthought.
