A practical guide to 'greening up' our urban inner cities.

By 2030 over 60% of the world’s population will live in cities, in the UK over 90% of the population will live in urban areas. With more people moving to the cities, there is an increase in exposure to air pollution and a decreased exposure to 'greenery'.

At the event, there will be a range of speakers from a diverse background, talking about the benefits of greening spaces and what can be done to improve air quality in cities.

Clean Air Day is the UK's largest air pollution campaign, engaging thousands of people at hundreds of events, and reaching millions more through the media. Clean Air Day is on 18 June 2020.

22 September is World Car Free Day, when all around the world towns and cities will be allowing people to experience streets free of motor traffic.

The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action. The enormous challenge — but also the vast opportunities — of action on climate change have distinguished the issue as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary.

The beneficial effect of introducing natural planting into the workplace and public environments is making ‘greening’ an increasingly integral part of designing building exteriors and interiors.  At this lunchtime seminar, experts will talk about the benefits of greening spaces and hear from major landlords about how they are embracing this strategy to increase the attraction of their properties.

With World Car Free Day 2020 just six months away, the March meeting will be an important milestone for community groups, council officers, and councillors to come together to share commitments for creating new Play Streets, Healthy School Streets, and walking high streets. Clean Air Day on 20th June will be an important test run of new open streets across the city ahead of World Car Free Day on 22nd September.
