Meristem Design further established our status as the leading designer and constructor of Parklets in the UK by installing Europe’s largest Parklet in Perth, Scotland, and beginning the role out of a series of six Parklets in Islington!
Meristem were at the forefront of the Mayor of London’s new drive to clean up our city’s air last week - installing green screens, as well as some other planting, in three schools around London during half term.
Wyvil Primary School in South Lambeth, Robin Hood Junior School in Sutton, and Christopher Hatton Primary School in Holborn are now the happy beneficiaries of our urban greening, providing a cleaner and healthier environment for their pupils to learn and play in.
The classic K6 BT box, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, was a familiar sight on the streets of the United Kingdom from 1926.
In 2006 the K2 telephone box was voted one of Britain's top 10 design icons along with another red favourite, the Routemaster bus. Due to a significant drop in their use since and the invention of the mobile phones the classic red BT telephone kiosks are unloved, unused and unfortunately being removed or sold into private use throughout the UK.
However there are still some left on our streets - we have repainted and greened up 2 of them. With a fresh splash of BT red paint we have added a steel planter, 2 large Trachelospermum, jasminoides, Vinca minor, Hedera helix and muehlenbeckia to two telephone boxes in Archway, Islington.
There are few urban environments where the air quality is poorer than under a city flyover and the Hammersmith flyover is no exception. The solution: over 95m of Living Green Screens in custom made planters. These pollution reducing screens are part of Hammersmith BID's Business Low Emission Neighbourhood and funded by Hammersmith and Fulham Council.
Meristem returned to St Peter’s Eaton Square C of E School in the heart of London for a second phase of Pollution Reducing Green Screens to improve air quality in the playground for its pupils, staff, parents and visitors.
Meristem installed 25m of 1m high Hedera Helix Woerner Green Screens in bespoke powder-coated steel planters.
We also added an an internal Live Picture filled with 6 fern varieties at the top of the stairs where it can enjoy maximum visibility from the children and staff.
Meristem planters on Rivington Street given colourful makeover by Lois O’Hara, an Artist / Designer from Brighton. A collaboration with Lois, W.A.Green and German design brand, pulpo have transformed our 6 large wooden street planters into wonderful art installations.
The 1 year old tree planters have slowed down passing traffic and made the area safer for pedestrians and locals.
Last Thursday Luxborough Street was temporarily closed to traffic for the Marylebone Low Emission Neighbourhood (LEN) Community Street Party.
We were joined in the sun by Dr. Bike cycle checks, Sustrans with their pedal powered tunes, face painting, air quality activities and information about other Low Emission Neighbourhood plans.
Meristem designed, supplied and installed 3 Parklets across the borough of Ealing.
The 3 Parklets are modular and can easily be moved to different locations using a pallet truck. They have a number of wooden benches and 6 bike parking spaces and are designed to encourage cycling, improve air quality, increase biodiversity and make the street greener for residents, shoppers and businesses.
Lambeth Council has always been one of the more innovative local authorities in combating air pollution for their residents. Their latest initiative involves selecting a number of schools in the most polluted areas of the borough in order to install our Green Screens to reduce air pollution by an average of 40%.
