Enhancing Keynsham Town Centre with Parklets and Cycle Parking

Meristem Design continues to deliver Parklets in Bath and North East Somerset, bringing vibrant transformations to public spaces. In our latest project, we had the privilege of installing two Parklets and bike parking modules in Keynsham town centre. Situated between the vibrant cities of Bath and Bristol, Keynsham boasts a history that dates back to prehistoric times.

Seamless Installation: Bringing Parklets to Life

The project consisted of the installation of 2 quite different 2mx6m Parklets, 2 bike parking modules and a standalone planter.

The Parklets were fully assembled and constructed off-site in our warehouses in sunny Sevenoaks before being transported down as complete units and installed with a HIAB vehicle. This meant that the installation of the Parklet was both seamless and incredibly quick.

Keynsham has a rich and vibrant history and Keynsham Town Council values the work done by the Keynsham High Street Heritage Action Zone partnership project to improve the look and feel of Temple Street now and for the future. Many thanks to Meristem Design for the on-time delivery of the works to Temple Street.

Ammonite Parklet: A Tribute to Local Heritage

The ammonite parklet features some interesting decals, a nod to the history of the local area. Laser-cut sections within the parklet not only mimic the ammonite pattern but also cast beautiful ammonite shadows along the pavement as the sun moves across the sky. This design element creates an ever-changing visual experience for visitors throughout the day.

Within the parklets, carefully positioned interpretation panels provide visitors with an opportunity to delve into the town's history. Designed at an accessible height for children, adults, and wheelchair users alike, these panels serve as informative guides. Cultural references such as wool, wood, and cogs are interspersed among drought-tolerant and sensory plantings, creating a harmonious blend of historical significance and natural beauty. These interpretation panels invite curiosity, encourage exploration, and deepen the connection between visitors and Keynsham's rich heritage.

Aesthetically Pleasing Design: Balancing Colors and Materials

The parklets in Keynsham feature a vibrant colour palette carefully balanced by the use of chunky, FSC-approved hardwood timber battens. This combination creates an appealing visual contrast that harmonises with the surrounding environment. Seating options within the parklets range from individual stools to large wrap-around benches and high chairs, accommodating diverse preferences and needs. The parklets are designed with wide openings and furniture that spills onto the pavement, ensuring easy accessibility for wheelchair users and allowing them to fully enjoy the space and engage with the community.

Community Collaboration: Stakeholders and the Power of Participation

The success of the parklet project in Keynsham owes much to the active involvement of local stakeholders, including business owners, residents, and Keynsham in Bloom. Since the project's inception, these stakeholders have played a vital role in the process and design development, contributing their insights and preferences to key features such as colour schemes and layout choices. This collaborative approach ensures that the parklets truly reflect the desires and aspirations of the community.

To further foster a sense of ownership and pride, stakeholders were invited to participate in a community planting event. Despite scorching temperatures exceeding 25ºC, over 20 enthusiastic community members braved the heat and joined forces to plant, mulch, and water the newly installed parklets. Keynsham Town Centre Council provided refreshments, publicity, and information, while Meristem Design supplied the planting event, planting materials, and equipment. This shared effort created a strong bond between the community and the parklets, cultivating a sense of collective responsibility for their care and maintenance.

The successful installation of parklets and cycle parking on Temple Street in Keynsham has transformed the area into a welcoming hub for residents and visitors alike. By embracing the rich history of Keynsham and incorporating biophilic design principles, the parklets provide an engaging experience that fosters a sense of connection to the town's heritage and natural surroundings.

Meristem Design looks forward to future collaborations with BaNES Council, as we continue to deliver innovative parklet solutions that enhance the quality of public spaces, promote sustainability, and contribute to the well-being of communities.
