Following on from last month's No Mow May campaign, Let it Bloom June encourages us to put the lawn mower away and allow our green spaces to grow more naturally. While trimmed lawns can be tempting and have long been the standard for parks, gardens and public green spaces, leaving areas to bloom can provide a wealth of benefits for both people and wildlife.

By leaving grass, wildflowers and other vegetation to flourish, even for a short period, we can create more valuable habitats and support local biodiversity. Many flowering species that would otherwise be cut before they have a chance to bloom are able to complete their life cycle, increasing the diversity of plants in a space and helping to support a wider range of pollinators, insects and other wildlife.

There are countless benefits to letting green spaces bloom, including:

Greater and richer habitats for pollinators and wildlife
Increased floral diversity
Improved soil health
Positive environmental impacts

The campaign also coincides with Pollinator Week (22-28 June), an annual celebration of the insects that play a vital role in our ecosystems. Bees, butterflies and other pollinators depend on flowering plants for nectar and pollen, making June one of the most important times of year to provide suitable habitats. By letting green spaces bloom, we can help create feeding opportunities for essential species like these.

This spring and summer, we've been focusing on creating pollinator-friendly spaces with a range of specially designed infrastructure and planting that supports the insects, birds and wildlife that keep our ecosystems thriving.
