Brooke Road Junction with Evering Road Public Realm scheme
The Brooke Road Junction public realm improvements have transformed a previously traffic-dominated junction into a permanent green space in the London Borough of Hackney. Delivered in collaboration with Hackney Council, the scheme has replaced temporary traffic management planters with rain gardens that create a more welcoming environment for residents. Having previously been responsible for the maintenance of these planters, we have seen the project through from a temporary LTN scheme into a permanent scheme that’s doing more for the environment and surrounding community.
Meristem Design were responsible for designing and delivering a colour-coded planting scheme that included over 730 perennials, shrubs and grasses. The planting was designed to provide visual interest while supporting biodiversity and creating a space for the local community to enjoy and interact with.

Testimonials
It’s great to see this planting at a junction that used to have a high rate of collisions, how it’s a beautiful space that has brought the community together for watering sessions in the hot weather and is already regularly used as a place for people to rest and play.
I’ve seen all ages tap into their inner child’s imaginations and cross the space in inventive ways. It’s great when a public realm intervention can bring increased safety, cleaner air, flood protection and joy all at once.
