Bold Street, Liverpool Hospitality Parklets

Liverpool hospitality Parklets to support businesses during social distancing

As part of Liverpool City Council's "Liverpool Without Walls" initiative, we designed and delivered seven hospitality parklets along Bold Street, creating additional outdoor space for restaurants, cafes and bars as the city adapted to social distancing requirements.

The parklets vary in size and configuration, replacing previous parking bays along the road. Designed to provide additional functional outdoor seating while introducing greenery into the landscape, the parklets combine timber decking, powder-coated steel planters and vibrant plant species.

The Bold Street parklets were designed to balance the practical needs of hospitality businesses with the council's broader ambition to create more welcoming and people-focused streets.

Adaptable Seating Features

A combination of fixed and freestanding furniture allowed businesses to adjust layouts and accommodate different group sizes, events and uses

Integrated Planting

Defining the space with planters and a vibrant planting scheme helped to create green boundaries that separated diners from drivers while adding colour and visual interest to the street

Modular Construction

Modular planter elements were designed to allow the parklets to fit seamlessly across different parking bay sizes, from single bay to larger three-bay spaces

Hospitality-focused Design

The parklets were a solution to expanding outdoor seating areas directly outside businesses to help hospitality venues make better use of available street space during COVID

The "Liverpool Without Walls" scheme demonstrated the impact of temporary public realm changes and how they can support businesses and people using the high street.

£8.9m Additional Revenue

The scheme generated £8.9 million in additional sales between 20th July and 25th September 2020

2,723 Additional Customers

Participating restaurants, cafes and bars were able to accommodate an additional 2723 covers

42% Increase in Visitors

Overall customers increased by 42%, with some smaller venues exceeding their pre-social-distancing capacity

Supporting the Hospitality Sector

95% of businesses surveyed were satisfied with the scheme after installation
