Walthamstow High Street Planting

Creating greener high street destinations: Planting along Walthamstow High Street

Client
Waltham Forest Council
Location

Project overview

As part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest’s “Culture for All” programme funded by the UK government Local Regeneration Fund, Meristem Design delivered an extensive planting scheme across Walthamstow Market and High Street, Cleveland Park Avenue and Rosebank Villas. Approximately 2,000 plants were installed within bespoke planters and in-ground planting areas, including a rain garden adjacent to Walthamstow Central Station. The work forms part of our ongoing partnership with the borough where we have helped deliver successful public realm schemes such as Juniper pocket park. The scheme enhances the space by introducing greenery that supports biodiversity, improves the streetscape and creates a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

Goal

The project aimed to introduce widespread planting into one of Walthamstow’s busiest public spaces, creating a greener and more attractive high street while supporting the borough’s wider regeneration goals. By integrating planting throughout the public realm, the scheme planned to improve the pedestrian experience, increase climate resilience and encourage people to spend more time in the area.

Scope

Soft landscaping involving planting was integrated across Walthamstow High Street, Cleveland Park Avenue and Rosebank Villas, including 19 large planters, 3 in-ground planting areas and rain gardens, 8 trees and approximately 300m² of planting.

Solutions

Working along the high street and market space, we delivered a coordinated planting scheme that introduces greenery throughout the public realm. The planting was carefully selected to provide seasonal interest, improve biodiversity and complement the surrounding streetscape.

A Large Planting Scheme

Planted approximately 2,000 plants across 19 large planters, boosting vibrance and providing year-round interest

Rain Garden Solution

Installed a rain garden with a diverse range of plants to create a more welcoming entrance to Walthamstow Station

Tree Planting

Incorporated tree planting into the scheme to increase canopy cover across the borough

Residential Planting Spaces

Expanded planted spaces into residential roads that connect to Walthamstow High street to create more pleasant resident pedestrian routes and traffic calming measures
Image

Impact

The completed scheme has transformed one of Walthamstow’s busiest areas, creating a greener space and more attractive high street that supports people, local businesses and wildlife while contributing to the borough’s wider regeneration goals.

A More Welcoming High Street

The planting creates a more attractive and welcoming market and high street space, encouraging people to stop and spend more time exploring the food and leisure businesses

Supporting Biodiversity

Diverse planting and rain garden features provide valuable spaces and food sources for pollinators and other wildlife

Improving the Public Realm

The planters help define pedestrian spaces and enhance the area's sense of character

Increasing Climate Resilience

New trees and planting contribute to increased canopy cover, shade and a healthier urban environment
