Project overview

Located in a private residence in South Kensington, the Hereford Road living wall was redesigned by Meristem Design to create a vibrant, year-round feature visible from both the kitchen and bedroom. Covering 9m² and incorporating 324 plants, the wall transforms a previously underperforming space into a carefully balanced, thriving green installation.

Despite being north-facing, the wall experiences varied light conditions, with partial sun at the top and deeper shade below. This required a thoughtful design approach to ensure each section remains vibrant and effective.

Goal

To redesign a residential living wall that responds to varied light conditions, ensuring healthy plant growth, visual balance and year-round interest.

Scope

The project involved the redesign and replanting of a 9m² living wall system, including the selection of 324 plants suited to different light levels. The scheme also includes ongoing monthly maintenance to support plant health and long-term performance.

Solutions

The Hereford Road living wall uses a zoned planting strategy to respond to changing light conditions across its height. By carefully matching plant species to their ideal environments, the design ensures consistent coverage, strong growth and visual cohesion throughout the wall.

Zoned planting strategy

The wall is divided into three zones; sun, semi-shade and shade - with each area planted accordingly to maximise plant health and performance.

Sun-tolerant upper layer

The top section features species that can handle more exposure, including Lavandula angustifolia and Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’.

Mid-level planting balance

The middle section uses adaptable plants like Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald Gaiety’, suited to partial sun and providing structure and continuity.

Shade-adapted lower layer

Ferns and shade-loving species thrive in the lower section, where light levels are lowest and moisture is more consistent.

Impact

The redesigned living wall is now a healthy, visually balanced feature that enhances the home environment while demonstrating the importance of designing for microclimates.

Improved plant health

Matching plants to their ideal conditions has resulted in stronger growth and reduced plant loss.

Year-round visual quality

A mix of evergreen structure and seasonal flowering ensures the wall remains attractive throughout the year.

Better use of space

The wall creates a striking green view from key living spaces, improving the overall feel of the home.

Long-term performance

With regular monthly maintenance, including pruning, feeding and monitoring, the wall continues to perform consistently over time.
