Project overview

Located in a private garden in Wimbledon, the Homefield Place living wall is one of Meristem Design’s earliest residential green wall installations – and a strong example of long-term success. Installed over eight years ago, the wall continues to thrive, providing a lush, green backdrop that enhances the garden year-round. Positioned on a sheltered, north-facing wall, the scheme benefits from stable growing conditions, allowing shade-tolerant planting to establish and mature into a dense, textured feature.

Goal

To create a low-maintenance, visually rich living wall that thrives in a shaded residential setting and delivers lasting impact over time.

Image

Scope

The project involved the design and installation of a 7m x 1m living wall system, incorporating 210 plants selected specifically for shade tolerance and long-term performance. Ongoing maintenance has played a key role in ensuring the wall’s continued health and appearance.

Solutions

The Homefield Place living wall was designed with longevity in mind. Careful plant selection, combined with a suitable aspect and consistent maintenance, has resulted in a resilient and well-balanced green feature that continues to perform years after installation.

Shade-tolerant planting

Species such as Asplenium scolopendrium, Sarcococca confusa and Polystichum setiferum were chosen to suit the north-facing aspect, ensuring reliable growth and year-round interest.

Layered texture & coverage

A mix of ferns, evergreen shrubs and trailing plants like Hedera and Muehlenbeckia complexa creates depth, softness and full coverage across the wall.

Optimised positioning

The sheltered location protects the planting from harsh conditions, supporting plant health and reducing stress over time.

Ongoing maintenance strategy

Regular pruning, feeding and monitoring keep the wall balanced and thriving, preventing overcrowding and ensuring long-term performance.
