Project overview

Meristem were commissioned to revitalise a residential living wall by reimagining its design and installing a new system.  The wall became a daily focal point within the home,  providing a natural backdrop and bringing lush greenery into everyday life. The client sought a composition rich in colour, texture and movement, while also supporting local biodiversity.  Alongside the redesign, we replaced and repainted the fascia and refined the area beneath the wall to create a cohesive and polished finish.

Goal

Our aim was to create an elegant living wall that feels alive year-round, incorporating resilient and ecologically rich planting. The textures and tones of the wall were designed with contrast in mind to creating a wall that feels dynamic and visually interesting. Improving the efficiency and precision of the watering system was a top priority in this project to ensure long-term sustainability with minimal maintenance.

Scope

The project included replacing the old wall system with a new modular structure, redesigning the planting scheme, integrating automated irrigation and refreshing the fascia and surrounding area to unify the overall design. The living wall spanned 16m² of the wall between the sitting room and kitchen.

Challenges

The previous structure of the wall was irregular, requiring a new approach that was tailored to the layout of the space.

Solutions

Working with the irregular structure of the existing wall required a customized and carefully coordinated approach. By adapting the modular system, refining surfaces, and developing a planting scheme suited to varied conditions, the team ensured both functional integrity and long-lasting visual interest. The planting scheme included the following:

  • Convolvulus cneorum
  • Soleirolia soleirolii
  • Rosmarinus prostratus
  • Euphorbia amygdaloides purpurea

Custom Integration

The modular system was tailored to align with the wall’s uneven form, achieving a seamless fit.

Surface Restoration

Repairs and refinishing created a clean, stable base for the new installation.

Precise Installation

Coordinated on-site work ensured accurate placement and a refined final appearance.

Diverse Planting

The plant scheme was curated to provide varied colours, textures and adaptability.
