Project overview

Juniper Pocket Park in Walthamstow has been transformed into a greener, more welcoming public space. Commissioned by Waltham Forest Council and designed by Erect Architecture, the project is part of a wider programme of improvements along Hoe Street to create safer, more vibrant spaces for the local community.

Meristem Design was responsible for the planting, long-term maintenance and installation of SuDS rain gardens. Our role was to bring the design to life, creating resilient, vibrant planting that offers year-round interest and strengthens the park’s identity as an inclusive space for all.

Goal

The goal was to rejuvenate the planting at Juniper Pocket Park, adding colour, structure, and biodiversity. Planting needed to be durable and drought-tolerant, while also providing seasonal flowering and interest. The addition of SuDS rain gardens tackled surface water management to reduce local flooding.

Scope

Our work at Juniper House pocket park included the planting and installation of rain gardens with resilient species suited to wet and dry conditions. The Pocket Park has integrated stone boulders, stepping stones, planting features and a new mural reading Tomorrow Our Paths May Cross” by artist Hanna Benihoud, celebrating connection and community.

Solutions

Set within the Walthamstow Cultural Quarter, Juniper Pocket Park is part of the tapestry of public places being transformed to achieve the cultural and active transport objectives of the wider area. It has an important role to play as one of the public stages along Hoe Street on route to Soho Theatre. Through the introduction of the SuDS, the project site alleviates surface flooding issues whilst also providing more planting to create a bright and visual identity for Juniper Square as a ‘pocket park’ to attract people to dwell and spend time here.

The artwork was designed by Artist Hanna Benihoud in collaboration with the Young Advisors Group to engage with local residents, exploring the theme of connection.

Resilient Planting Design

Species were selected for their hardiness, drought tolerance, and biodiversity benefits. Pittosporum, Verbena, and Carex formed the structural backbone, supported by flowering perennials and grasses for colour and texture.

Sustainable Urban Drainage (SuDS) Rain Gardens

Circular SuDS planters and rain beds were planted to mitigate flooding and help prevent pooling in the busy thoroughfare.

Sensory and Biodiverse Choices

Herbs like mint and lemongrass introduced a fragrant sensory element, while flowering plants added nectar sources for pollinators and visual impact throughout the year.

Community Mural

Artist Hanna Benihoud created the installation of “Tomorrow Our Paths May Cross”, a vibrant piece co-created with local residents. It symbolises the threads of connection that unite the community.

Impact

The revitalisation of Juniper Pocket Park has created a greener, safer, and more vibrant public space in the heart of Walthamstow. New SuDS rain gardens manage rainfall sustainably while boosting biodiversity, resilient planting ensures year-round colour and structure, and the community mural strengthens the park’s identity as a place of connection. Together, these improvements enhance climate resilience, support local wellbeing, and unlock the Pocket Park’s potential as a valued and vibrant space for residents and visitors alike.

Biodiversity Boost

The refreshed Pocket Park now supports a richer variety of plants and pollinators, with resilient species offering food, shelter, and seasonal colour.

Climate Resilience

New SuDS rain gardens improve rainwater permeability, reduce flooding, and create a more sustainable green infrastructure.

Community Value

The colourful mural and improved planting encourage people to use the space, promoting safety, connection, and pride in the local area.

Longevity and Care

Through careful species selection and ongoing maintenance by our team, the Pocket Park is designed to thrive over the long term with minimal intervention.
