Project overview
In the heart of North Kensington, Meristem Design partnered with the Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team (LWNT) to create an inviting and sustainable outdoor space. Funded by the Future Neighbourhood Fund, the parklet was commissioned to enhance the area outside Kensington Leisure Centre, offering residents a vibrant space that encourages community engagement and connects them with nature.

Goal
The project aimed to transform an underutilised urban area into a lively, green space that would serve as a hub for social interaction, enhance local biodiversity, and promote sustainable living.
Scope
The parklet was designed to maximise greenery, integrating an abundance of planters and a living roof structure. This biophilic design promotes biodiversity, improves air quality, and offers a relaxing space for residents. The project also reflected the LWNT’s branding, incorporating their signature colours and timber cladding for a cohesive visual identity.

Solutions
Designing for maximum greening and connection with nature, Meristem created a space that blended both functionality and aesthetics.
The main driving force behind the design was maximum greening, achieved by an abundance of planters and incorporating a living roof structure. The main benefits behind this are improved air quality, increased biodiversity and a relaxing visual appeal. This also gives residents in a built-up area a connection with nature.
To ensure a seamless blend with the community, we utilised the branding colours of the Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team (LWNT), creating a cohesive identity for the parklet. Timber cladding on the majority of the planters added warmth and texture, complementing the vibrant greenery. This attention to detail resulted in an aesthetically pleasing outdoor space that residents easily identify as an integral part of their community.

Impact
Meristem Design’s Lancaster West Community Parklet exemplifies the transformative power of well-designed urban spaces. We have created a vibrant and inviting outdoor space that fosters social interaction, promotes wellbeing, and showcases innovative urban design.
