Enhancing Sustainable Travel: Mobility Hub Parklets for Redbridge
Client
London Borough of Redbridge
Location

Project overview

In collaboration with the London Borough of Redbridge, we designed and delivered a series of vibrant parklets that form the UK’s first officially accredited Mobility Hub, as recognised by Collaborative Mobility UK (CoMoUK). These modular public realm installations reclaim on-street parking space to support low-carbon travel, social connection and greener streets

Goal

The project aims to integrate multiple modes of sustainable transport, including public, shared and active travel, in one accessible space, reducing car-dependency and minimising carbon emissions. It also intends to improve the quality of urban spaces by creating a welcoming, convenient and usable environment for residents and commuters.

Scope

The Redbridge Mobility Hub project saw the creation of multiple modular parklets in South Woodford, turning parking bays into vibrant community spaces. Each parklet was designed to support sustainable travel while improving the local streetscape with greenery and seating. Together, they form a connected hub that encourages active travel and enhances the public realm

Solutions

The Redbridge Mobility Hub parklets were designed with flexibility and community in mind. By combining sustainable transport infrastructure with thoughtful design, each installation enhances the local environment, and encourages more active, accessible ways to move through the city.

Integrated Transport Options

The parklets support an EV car club bay and provide space for bike share, scooter docks and cycle parking, all within walking distance of public transport.

People-first Design Approach

High tables, outdoor cafe seating and accessible pathways make the hub a place people can relax in, not just pass through.

Nature-based Features

Planters and trees provide shade, improve biodiversity, and reduce surface water runoff.

Modular Components

Modular parklets allow for a flexible use of space that can be tailored to the needs of the community.

Impact

The Redbridge Mobility Hub parklets demonstrate how small but intricate public interventions can support wider social and environmental goals. By offering sustainable travel choices and creating greener, more inviting public spaces, the parklets not only ease pressure on local transport systems but also improve daily life for residents and visitors.

Sustainable Travel

Easier access to shared, greener transport options reduces car-dependency.

Greener Streets

Added planting improves drainage, air quality and the overall climate resilience of the area.

Community Enhancement

The parklets create a more pleasant and inclusive space which encourages positive use of the public area.

National Recognition

As the first CoMoUK-accredited hub, the project sets a model for the standard of the future of Mobility Hubs.
