Greening for Stratford Fire Station: Planting on Romford Road
Client
Newham Council and Stratford Fire Station
Location

Project overview

Located on Romford Road – a busy route linking Stratford and Ilford – this project at Stratford Fire Station forms part of a wider initiative by Newham Council to improve air quality, support sustainable travel and enhance the urban environment.

Working in collaboration with Newham Council and the London Fire Brigade, Meristem Design delivered a series of planting interventions at Stratford Fire Station. The scheme transformed underused and hardstanding areas, including an unloved courtyard, into vibrant green spaces that benefit both firefighters and the wider community.

A key feature of the project was the hands-on involvement of local firefighters, who worked alongside the team to help bring the planting to life.

Goal

To introduce high-quality planting into a busy urban setting, improving biodiversity, wellbeing and visual appeal while creating a more welcoming environment for fire station staff and the local community.

Image

Scope

The project included the design and installation of planting across multiple areas of the fire station, including new raised planters and in-ground planting. Works involved plant selection, supply and installation, alongside collaboration with Newham Council and on-site participation from fire station staff.

Solutions

The Stratford Fire Station planting project helps to soften a highly urban environment. By combining trees, perennials and grasses, the design creates a resilient and attractive landscape that supports both biodiversity and everyday use. m

Tree planting for structure

Three Acer campestre ‘Streetwise’ trees provide height, shade and structure, helping define the space and improve air quality along a busy road.

Resilient planting palette

Over 250 hardy, drought-tolerant plants - including Achillea ‘Moonshine’, Cistus x purpureus and blue oat grass - were selected for their durability, colour and seasonal interest.

Raised planters & ground planting

A mix of raised beds and in-ground planting maximises greenery across the site, improving previously underused areas such as the courtyard.

Collaborative delivery

Firefighters played an active role in the installation, supporting planting and even helping with watering - strengthening ownership and connection to the space.

Impact

The project has transformed the fire station into a greener, more welcoming space, showing how even small urban sites can deliver meaningful environmental and social benefits.

Enhanced biodiversity

New planting introduces habitat and food sources for pollinators, contributing to urban biodiversity alongside a heavy traffic road.

Improved wellbeing

The space provides a calm, green area for fire station staff to rest and recharge, while also being enjoyed by the local community.

Greener streetscape

The addition of trees and planting softens the surrounding environment, adding colour and life to a busy urban road.

Strong community collaboration

Working closely with firefighters and the council has created a shared sense of ownership and pride in the space.
