Romsey Living Wall

Whether you have a little or a lot of space, a living wall can be a great way of creating instant impact in your garden.

We have designed our own lightweight system made from galvanised, recycled steel troughs which are easy to install and will stand the test of time. Those wanting even more 'wow' factor can also have the troughs powder coated in nearly any colour!

The team have installed and replanted walls of all shapes and sizes across Greater London, ranging from private residential walls to high-profile office receptions Our system is designed and professionally installed by the Meristem team who can offer expert advice or a scheduled maintenance program to keep your wall looking its best.

The wall above was installed in 2022 for a new client who lives just outside of Romsey town centre in Hampshire. Shelley found us online and contacted us about installing a wall in her courtyard garden which is overlooked by their kitchen and conservatory.

As someone with green fingers herself, there were already very well-kept areas of the garden to the front of the property. The courtyard is a sheltered area with brickwork and fencing to either side with a few pots to be found elsewhere.

Our living wall designer Nina Simoes worked with Shelley to develop a design that included plants she had personally requested such as Vinca minor blue and Fragaria vesca Strawberry. The wall has also been mounted with a gap between the system and brickwork to eliminate any chance of water ingress or leachate on the wall.

Everyone was thrilled at the end result and Shelley could now enjoy her morning coffee while gazing out at a verdant wall, reconnecting with nature right in her urban setting. Let us know if you have a space for a wall to see what the possibilities are!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is a living wall?

A living wall, often referred to as a green wall or plant wall, is an innovative and eco-friendly approach to infusing greenery into urban spaces. Unlike traditional gardens that spread horizontally, living walls take advantage of vertical spaces, allowing plants to grow upwards on specially designed structures. These walls can be integrated both indoors and outdoors, transforming barren walls into vibrant, living tapestries. The concept of living walls is rooted in the idea of maximising green spaces in urban environments where horizontal space is often limited. Beyond aesthetics, living walls also offer numerous environmental benefits, including air purification, temperature regulation, and noise reduction.

  2. How does living wall maintenance work?

Living wall maintenance involves regular watering, pruning, and checking for pests or diseases. We offer a scheduled maintenance program to keep walls looking their best.

Maintaining a living wall is essential for both its longevity and its aesthetic appeal. One of the primary aspects of living wall maintenance is watering. Just like any garden, living walls need consistent hydration. The exact frequency and volume of water depend on the specific plants and the wall's location. To make this process efficient, many living wall designs incorporate automated irrigation systems.

As plants grow, some might overshadow their neighbours or simply outgrow their designated space. This is where pruning comes into play. Regular trimming ensures the design remains as intended and that every plant gets its fair share of light.

Living walls, much like traditional gardens, can fall prey to pests and diseases. When problems do arise, natural solutions, like introducing predator insects, can be an environmentally friendly way to handle pests.

Additionally, the growth medium used in living walls might not always provide all the nutrients plants need. In such cases, it's beneficial to periodically add a balanced liquid fertiliser to ensure plant health.

  3. Can I have a living wall in my apartment?

Absolutely! Living walls are incredibly versatile and can be adapted to various spaces, including apartments. Vertical gardens for apartments are not only a great way to introduce greenery into your living space but also offer numerous benefits:

    • Air Purification: Plants are natural air purifiers. They absorb pollutants and release clean oxygen, improving indoor air quality.

    • Humidity Regulation: Plants release moisture through a process called transpiration, which can help regulate indoor humidity levels, making the environment more comfortable.

    • Aesthetic Appeal: A living wall can be a stunning focal point in any room, adding a touch of nature and vibrancy.

When considering a living wall for an apartment, it's essential to choose plants that thrive in indoor conditions and consider factors like lighting and humidity.

  4. Which are the best plants for living walls?

The choice of plants for living walls depends on various factors, including the wall's location (indoor vs. outdoor), climate, and maintenance level. It's essential to consult with experts like us to choose the right plants that will thrive in the specific conditions of your living wall.
