Perks and White Café Living Wall: A Biophilic Oasis in Piccadilly

In the heart of Piccadilly, a small coffee shop called Perks and White has taken a unique step towards incorporating nature into their interior design. Owned and run by local residents of 20 years, Perks and White is a cherished local business with locations in Herne Hill, Tulse Hill, and now in Piccadilly.

Their commitment to delivering the finest coffee, tea, and locally produced artisan food is matched only by their dedication to incorporating nature into their spaces.

Partnering with Meristem Design, Perks and White has transformed their space into a biophilic oasis that combines the beauty of nature with the warm and inviting ambience of a café.

In this project, we crafted a unique combination of a living wall, mounted hanging planters, and external planters strategically placed to define the seating area.

Bringing Nature Indoors: The Living Wall Concept

The central feature of the Perks and White Café is, undoubtedly, the stunning living wall. Also known as a plant wall, green wall, or vertical garden, a living wall is a self-sufficient system of plants arranged vertically on a wall surface. These walls are not only visually appealing but also offer a host of benefits that go beyond aesthetics.

We designed and installed this captivating living wall that covers the entire back wall of the café's mezzanine. This prominent location ensures that the living wall catches the attention of passersby, becoming a statement piece that showcases Perks and White's commitment to creating an extraordinary environment for their customers. When we inquired about their clients’ feedback, they enthusiastically described it as overwhelmingly positive. People are amazed and often find it hard to believe that the living wall is real!

The Impact of Biophilic Design

The incorporation of a living wall at Perks and White Café aligns with the principles of biophilic design, which seeks to connect people with nature in the built environment. Biophilia, our innate tendency to seek connections with nature, has been scientifically proven to improve our well-being, reduce stress, and enhance productivity. By integrating natural elements into the workplace, Perks and White have created a space that fosters a sense of calmness and rejuvenation for both customers and staff.

The Benefits of an Indoor Living Wall:

  1. Enhanced Aesthetics: The living wall at Perks and White Café serves as an exquisite focal point, adding a touch of vibrancy and lushness to the café's interior. The carefully curated arrangement of plants creates a visually appealing backdrop that perfectly complements the café's modern and inviting ambience.

  2. Improved Air Quality: Indoor plants act as natural air purifiers, effectively filtering harmful pollutants and releasing fresh oxygen into the surrounding environment. With the living wall in place, Perks and White have significantly enhanced the air quality within their café, providing a breath of fresh air for their discerning customers.

  3. Increased Productivity and Well-being: Extensive research has indicated that exposure to nature and greenery can substantially enhance productivity and overall well-being. The presence of the living wall at Perks and White Café cultivates a conducive environment, helping customers feel more relaxed, focused, and content during their visits.

Maintenance and Sustainability

At Meristem Design, we understand that the longevity and vitality of a living wall heavily rely on proper care and maintenance. To ensure that the Living Wall remains a stunning and vibrant feature, we conduct regular inspections and maintenance visits. Our dedicated team meticulously examines the irrigation system and monitors the plants' health. This proactive approach guarantees that the living wall maintains its healthy appearance, impressing both clientele and passersby alike.

Brand Differentiation and Customer Experience

Perks and White recognised the significance of setting themselves apart from other coffee shops in the area. By embracing a nature-inspired design and incorporating the living wall, they have successfully created a unique selling point that differentiates them from the competition. Customers are not only drawn to the café for their high-quality beverages and delectable treats but also for the immersive experience of being surrounded by a lush green oasis.

Conclusion

The Perks and White Café showcases the power of biophilic design and the impact it can have on a space. Through the seamless integration of nature-inspired elements, Perks and White has transformed their café into a haven of tranquillity and beauty. The living wall serves as a captivating feature that captivates passersby while providing numerous benefits such as enhanced aesthetics, improved air quality, and a productive environment.
