We’re thrilled to share that the Market Street, Oxford public realm improvement scheme has been named Best Infrastructure Project – Small (under £5m) at the ICE South East Awards 2025.

This collaborative project – delivered by Meristem Design, Urban Movement, Civic Engineers, Oxford City Council, and ODS – has transformed a once grey and underused street into a vibrant, pedestrian-first destination that blends history, nature, and community use.

The scheme was recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers for its thoughtful approach to placemaking. By introducing greenery, community seating, and bespoke infrastructure, the team created a welcoming, flexible space that supports the historic Covered Market, boosts local businesses, and offers a green retreat in the heart of the city.

Meristem Design contributed bespoke planters, benches, and deckless parklets – all designed to integrate seamlessly with Oxford’s historic architecture while delivering environmental benefits such as improved air quality, biodiversity, and enhanced wellbeing.
