The Green Roots Fund - part of the Mayor of London’s Green Roots programme - has launched a major £12 million funding opportunity to support local authorities and not-for-profits delivering greener, more climate-resilient neighbourhoods.
“Access to nature is a social justice issue… The Green Roots Fund will reconnect Londoners to local spaces and bring nature back into the city for all to enjoy.”
- Mete Coban, Deputy Mayor for Environment
If you represent a London borough, Business Improvement District (BID), charity, community group or housing association, this is a chance to fund transformational work around green spaces, wetlands, SuDS, rewilding, climate adaptation and more.
Priority theme for this round: Clean and healthy waterways
What’s eligible?

What is the Green Roots Fund?
The Green Roots Fund is a major new £12 million grant programme from the Mayor of London. It supports projects that enhance green and blue infrastructure across London, helping communities adapt to climate change while improving biodiversity, public spaces and access to nature.
From sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and wetlands to rewilding, tree planting and community engagement, the fund is designed to help create a greener, more resilient London for all.
Who can apply?
The fund is open to formally constituted, not-for-profit organisations operating in Greater London, including:
- Local authorities and councils
- Business Improvement Districts (BIDs)
- Housing associations and TMOs
- Registered charities and social enterprises
- Community interest companies and community groups
Applications are also welcomed from partnerships between public bodies and third sector organisations.
Why this funding matters?
Green and blue infrastructure plays a critical role in:
- Climate resilience and flood protection
- Health and wellbeing
- Biodiversity and habitat restoration
- Community empowerment and engagement
The fund aims to improve environmental outcomes in areas where need is greatest - especially places with limited access to nature.
What kinds of projects will be funded?
The Green Roots Fund supports two main types of projects:
1. Implementation Projects
These improve the physical environment and include:
- Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS)
- Park and green space creation/restoration
- Tree planting and species reintroduction
- Wetlands and urban waterway improvements
- Climate adaptation measures (e.g. flood prevention, urban cooling)
2. Enabling Projects
These focus on supporting activities, such as:
- Feasibility studies and design work
- Community outreach and co-design
- Micro-grant schemes
- Baseline surveys
- Training and volunteer activation
Projects must last no more than two years and benefit the public. Activities outside Greater London, routine maintenance, or projects without a plan for long-term sustainability will not be eligible.
