What is No Mow Way and why do we need it?

No Mow Way is an annual campaign led by Plantlife that encourages people to let their lawns grow wild during the month of May. The idea is simple: don't mow the lawn! The initiative aims to bring wildlife and biodiversity back to our green spaces.

Since the 1930s, approximately 70% of UK flower-rich meadows have been lost which has taken vital food sources and habitats away. The result has been a significant decline in biodiversity - something that No Mow May wishes to solve.

What are we doing to boost biodiversity?

At Meristem, we prioritise the use of wildflower turf across our sites to encourage growth, increase greenery, and attract pollinators. A diverse planting scheme creates a richer, more resilient environment to support bees, insects and other wildlife.

Concentrated planting can also help to:

Improve air quality by capturing pollutants and producing oxygen
Enhance visual appeal with seasonal colour and texture
Strengthen climate resilience by supporting ecosystems and healthier soils

Where have we used wildflower turf?

At John Keble primary school, we were tasked with creating a small and engaging meadow-like nature garden in the previously neglected school playground.

We prioritised creating an interactive environment for pupils while reintroducing biodiversity. By laying wildflower turf and allowing the space time to establish, the area quickly evolved into a vibrant, living landscape.
