Barnfield Primary School SuDS Planters

Flood-proofing local schools : Barnfield Primary School SuDS Planters

We partnered with Barnet Council, Thames21 and the Action for Silk Stream organisation to deliver a large-scale school-wide SuDS Planter programme at Barnfield Primary School in Barnet. The schools sits within the Silk Stream catchment and was identified as an area at risk of extreme surface water flooding. We designed fabricated and installed 15 bespoke SuDS planters with integrated seating as well as water butts and rain clouds.

To engage the children in the SuDS for schools project we ran two nature workshops, teaching them the importance of flood mitigation and practical, hands-on planting skills.

We designed, fabricated and delivered a range of timber SuDS planters to help combat flooding in the school, create engaging learning spaces and brighter environments for children to play in.

SuDS Planters

Installed 15 SuDS planters of varying sizes with downpipe conversions to efficiently capture and slow roof runoff to prevent flooding in the courtyard spaces. Some of the planters had benches integrated into their design to create a more comfortable environment

Rain Clouds

Rain clouds were attached to downpipes in the main courtyard to add visual interest to the space

Water Butts

We sourced and installed three water butts across two courtyards to harvest rain water that the school can use more efficiently

Nature Workshops

We structured and ran two nature workshops with the students to engage them in SuDS and foster a sense of ownership in their green spaces

The introduction of SuDS Planters, water butts and engaging features has created a positive impact on the environment, pupils and teachers at the school. By covering a large area, the project has created wider impact particularly on flood risk mitigation.

Flood Risk Reduction

Integrating a large number of SuDS Planters means that large volumes of roof runoff can be captured and slowed, mitigating flood risk for the school

Rain Water Repurposing

Water butt installation means that rainwater from gutters can be harvested and used to water the SuDS Planters during dryer spells

Engaging Spaces

Benches, rain cloud features and nature workshops all contribute to building an interactive space for pupils to get involved in learning about and caring for their green spaces

Happier Pupils and Teachers

The school have reported that pupils seem happier in their playgrounds and teachers have commented on how the space feels 'softer'
