Project overview

We worked with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team to transform the courtyard at Bramley House into a welcoming community garden for residents. As part of our ongoing partnership with the Lancaster West team, the scheme introduced a nature-led landscape designed to encourage the residents to spend more time outdoors. Combining planting, seating and bespoke timber features, the project revamped an underused courtyard into a greener and more sociable space.

Goal

The project was centred around creating a more attractive and accessible communal garden that encouraged residents to use and enjoy the outdoor space. The space was previously overlooked and underutilised so we aimed to change this by introducing seating, planting and natural materials to strenghten community interaction and improve the character of the courtyard and housing estate.

Scope

The project refurbished the residential courtyard at Bramley house. Works included the installation of a bespoke timber pergola supported by large integrated planters, additional timber planters, three gabion benches and new accessible surfacing throughout the space. The planting scheme featured seasonal and year-round planting, new trees and climbing ivy to create a greener, more vibrant landscape.

Solutions

The design focused on creating a multifunctional communal garden that balanced accessibility, biodiversity and opportunities for social interaction.  All aspects and individual designs were considered to maximise the use of the courtyard while introducing a stronger connection with nature for local residents.

Community Garden

The courtyard was reimagined as a shared residential green space where residents can meet, relax and spend time outdoors in a more pleasant and welcoming environment

Bespoke Pergola

A timber pergola supported by large integrated planters creates a focal point within the garden while introducing height, structure and opportunities for climbing plants

Layered Planting

Trees, seasonal planting, year-round species and climbing ivy were combined to provide colour, texture and biodiversity throughout the seasons

Accessible Design

New surfacing improves accessibility across the courtyard, creating a more inclusive outdoor space that is easier for residents and visitors to navigate
