Revitalising school playgrounds: Melcombe Primary School Living Walls and Green Screens

We worked with Hammersmith and Fulham Council to revitalise the green infrastructure at Melcombe Primary School. Using over 1000 plants and 14 ivy green screens supplied by Mobilane, we transformed the school playground space into a green and welcoming place for children and teachers to spend time.

The project consisted of revitalising previous green screens by replacing them with 14 ivy screens that line the school fence and replanting a 35m2 living wall with a vibrant, resilient and intricate planting scheme that featured over 1000 plants, including:

Salvia rosmarinus prostata
Convolvulus Cneorum
Luzula nivea ‘Lucius’
Erigeron Karvinskianus

The living wall was also fit with a new irrigation system to ensure that the green screens and living wall receive regular scheduled watering.

The introduction of refreshed green screens and living wall planting aimed to create a greener, more vibrant atmosphere for children and teachers when using the playground.

Green Screen Replacement

We sourced and installed 14 ivy screens to line a fence in the school playground, contributing to enhanced privacy and better air quality.

Living Wall Plant Selection

We designed the living wall planting scheme to feature vibrant and resilient species, totalling over 1000 plants across the space

Edible Species

Edible species like rosemary and thyme were also selected for children and teachers to use for further learning and engagement

5 Year Maintenance Plan

An established maintenance plan means that our team will make regular visits over the next five years to ensure the planting remains fresh, healthy and beneficial for students, pupils and visitors

The green refresh has brought an array of benefits for both school children and the surrounding environment, adding visual and physical enhancements to the space.

Enhanced Privacy

The green screens lining a fence fill small gaps in the fence that previously compromised privacy as well as helping to filter noise and air pollution

A More Engaging Environment

The inclusion of edible plants in the planting scheme as well as other textural species create a more interactive and immersive space for pupils

Greener and Cleaner Spaces

The introduction of the ivy screens help to capture carbon particulate and contribute to cleaner breathing air for children and teachers, helping to offset emissions from the busy nearby main road

A Visually Engaging Playground

Vibrant flowering species combined with layered planting techniques and plants selected for texture help create a dynamic and interesting space
