Camden Parklets and Planters

Revitalising High Streets: Parklets and Planters for Camden
Client
Camden Council and Fitzrovia Partnership
Location

Project overview

As part of Camden’s Streateries initiative, Meristem Design deployed over 15 parklets—amounting to 150 linear metres—across prominent high streets. Meristem Design and Fitzrovia Partnership have also collaborated to transform key areas in Fitzrovia with parklets and planters, adding green infrastructure to enhance the business improvement district.

Goal

To support local businesses, increase foot traffic, and enhance Camden’s streetscape by creating welcoming, green spaces.

Scope

The project includes a variety of large, custom-built planters and parklets strategically positioned in high-traffic areas to maximise their impact on Camden’s streets. Each parklet is modular and versatile, designed to add greenery without obstructing pedestrian flow.

Challenges

During the Covid outbreak, outdoor spaces for hospitality were fundamental. We had to ensure that parklets provided enough space for customers that they felt safe and comfortable. Challenges also included designing for compact spaces without disrupting pedestrian flow, selecting durable materials, and ensuring plants thrive in urban conditions.

Solutions

Meristem used a modular approach throughout the Camden installations, allowing parklets and planters to be easily adjusted or relocated as needed. The planters feature native and hardy plants, specifically selected to tolerate pollution and attract beneficial insects, improving biodiversity in the urban area. The parklets also integrate seating areas, promoting social interaction and allowing people to connect with nature in Camden’s streets.

Meristem Design were then asked to design a series of planters to enhance the small section of Warren Street which is free from passing vehicles.  The layout of the planters was designed to create a green gateway into the area with a pair of large olive trees and a selection of shrubs in colourful planters.  The planters along this section were also designed to fit around the existing seating and table to create green seating zones. We incorporated some of the local coffee shops branding colours into the selection of paint we used on the planters.

Impact

The project supports Camden’s biodiversity, with plants that attract pollinators and improve ecological health. Additionally, the green infrastructure helps improve air quality and fosters social engagement, making the streets feel safer, more welcoming, and inclusive.

The introduction of the parklets and planters can help increase revenue and footfall for local businesses, improving the economy and increasing customer dwell time. Our parklets support outdoor dining spaces, turning parking areas into vibrant, pedestrian-friendly zones for local cafes, restaurants, and businesses to serve customers safely.

Testimonials

We are focused on supporting our hospitality businesses to resume trading so they can survive and thrive. The absolute last thing residents will want to see is empty high streets of closed-up cafes and restaurants. Creating streateries is one way we are supporting businesses to operate differently to ensure they are COVID secure.
