CoMo Pop-up Mobility Hubs

Supporting Active Travel: Pop-up Mobility Hubs for Scotland
Client
CoMoUK
Location

Project overview

Meristem Design partnered with CoMoUK to design, fabricate, and supply a series of pop-up mobility hubs across Scotland. Delivered through Paths for All’s Smarter Choices and Smarter Places Fund, these modular hubs aim to promote active and sustainable travel, transforming everyday spaces into vibrant, accessible community assets.

The hubs have been installed in locations throughout Scotland such as Mount Florida, Kinning Park, and Kelvinbridge, with temporary placements outside schools, leisure centres, and high streets. Each hub spends around eight weeks at a site, encouraging residents to trial new ways of travelling actively.

Goal

Delivered by the charity CoMoUK through the Paths for All’s Smarter Choices, Smarter Places Fund, the pop-up hubs project aims to make active travel easier, more accessible and visible by combining shared transport facilities with community friendly features. The Hubs also aim to reduce dependency on private car use by encouraging walking and cycling for the local communities everyday journeys.

Scope

CoMoUK’s pop-up mobility hubs are small, moveable, modular parklets that have:
  • Cycle parking/bike sharing docking station
  • Bike repair stand, tools and pump
  • Textured access ramp
  • Selection of plants and shrubs
  • Totem and QR code with local transport information
  • Accessible seating area with coffee table
  • Modular design allows for easy transportation

Each hub was designed to be portable and modular, breaking down into three equal sections for simple transport and reassembly as they move between Scottish communities.

Solutions

The pop-up mobility hubs were designed to be flexible, inclusive, and community-focused. Each installation combines active travel infrastructure with inviting public realm features, creating spaces that are easy to move, set up, and use across different neighbourhoods.

Modular & Portable

Each hub breaks down into three equal sections, making transport and reassembly simple as they move between communities across Scotland.

Cycle Facilities

Hubs include a nextbike hire station, additional cycle parking, and a free-to-use bike repair stand with tools and pump.

Accessible Design

Seating areas, textured access ramps, and planting create a safe, welcoming space for people of all ages and abilities.

Community Information

Totems with QR codes provide residents with easy access to local sustainable transport options and events.

Impact

The hubs show how temporary, visible interventions can encourage more active travel. By combining bike sharing with sociable, accessible spaces, they help reduce barriers, engage communities, and identify the best places for future mobility hubs.

Facilitated Multiple Journeys

A total of 623 bike hire journeys were made possible through the pop-up hubs.

Engaging New Users

201 unique users accessed shared transport services, many for the first time.

Community Activities

357 residents took part in 35 free sessions including bike maintenance, led walks, and coffee meet-ups.

Tested Various Locations

Six different types of site – from schools to leisure centres and high streets – were trialled to inform future planning.
