Project overview
This project formed part of Hackney Council’s wider plan to create greener, safer, and more pleasant streets across the borough. Across two phases on Downham Road, new rain gardens were installed and planted to make better use of kerb space and introduce more greenery. The initiative contributes to improving the public realm, supporting biodiversity, and enhancing the experience for pedestrians and cyclists.

Goal
The goal was to transform a busy section of Downham Road into a safer, more attractive, and environmentally sustainable streetscape. By integrating rain gardens on the roadside, the project aimed to reduce surface water runoff, calm traffic, and create a welcoming environment for the community. The site experiences heavy footfall and is located near a primary school, cafes, and homes, making safety and aesthetic improvements a top priority.

Scope
The works took place along Downham Road, a key location in Hackney’s local transport network. Our team was responsible for the planting, installation, and ongoing maintenance of 18 rain garden beds along the route.
Phase one covered 158.7m² of planting area, followed by 152.83m² in phase two. Around 2,177 plants were installed, alongside plans to add 2,700 bulbs to further enhance colour, texture, and seasonal interest throughout the year. These green installations were designed to complement new kerb build-outs, widened pavements, and improved pedestrian crossings introduced by Hackney Council.
