Gladstone Community Parklet

Building vibrant community spaces : Gladstone community parklet

We worked with Haringey Council and local not-for-profit organisation, Grow N22, to transform a junction into a bright, community parklet for residents and local school children. The area underwent a transformation in which the junction was sealed off to traffic, creating a pedestrianised space, but this encouraged a spike in antisocial behaviour. Grow N22 secured a grant from the council under the Mayor of London’s ‘Grow Back Greener’ fund to transform the space into a welcoming destination.

We designed, fabricated and installed a range of timber planters and street furniture components to form a community parklet space. The works were complemented by new cycle lanes and paving, transforming the once overlooked corner into a dynamic, colourful and safer area.

The parklet was designed as a multifunctional community space, combining timber planters, integrated seating and colourful detailing to create a welcoming addition to the newly pedestrianised area.

Bespoke Fabrication

Designed and fabricated a timber parklet tailored to the space and community, incorporating planters, seating and stepping features

Integrated Planting

Planted the space with a bespoke planting plan that prioritises vibrance and structural interest, softening the space and introducing more nature into the community

Community-led Design

Incorporated ideas gathered from local primary school pupils during the early design stages to help shape the look and feel of the final product

Colourful Details

Painted timber panels in varying colours to add vibrancy and visual interest, creating a focal point in the public realm

The parklet has helped transform a previously underused and problematic pedestrianised space into a warmer and more welcoming community setting. By combining seating, planting and community-based design ideas, the scheme creates a space that encourages people to stop, interact and spend time in the area.

Community Ownership

By involving local primary school pupils in the design process, they were given the opportunity to shape how the community space would look and feel

Safer Spaces

Introduction of planting and seating encourages more positive activity and use of the space, helping to support the initial ambition of addressing antisocial behaviour

Active Travel

Complemented wider pedestrianisation improvements and restricted vehicle access with strategic placement of the parklet

Vibrant Placemaking
