Project overview

The living wall spanned the light well area of a residential property in Chelsea, transforming it into a green focal point of the house and a calming natural feature for the adjoining office. The living wall provides a year-round structure with subtle seasonal variation and textural depth to suit the conditions of the light well.

Goal

This project aimed to transform a blank, underutilised wall into a lush vertical garden that serves as a green visual centrepiece for the property. The living wall was projected to offer aesthetic value, a close connection to nature and a calming backdrop for both work and leisure.

Scope

The project encompassed the design, installation and ongoing maintenance of a 14sqm living wall, complemented by five planters positioned along the upper ledge of the wall.

An irrigation system was integrating into the design to optimise water efficiency and reduce maintenance requirements, keeping the plants healthy with minimal intervention.

Challenges

One of the key challenges was ensuring that the planting design did not obstruct a security camera overlooking the light well. This required precise placement of plants and ongoing monitoring to maintain clear sight lines.

Additionally, the narrow access to the upper ledge for the planters required careful planning and plant selection to ensure long-term success.

Solutions

To ensure the living wall could thrive in a shaded and compact space with limited access, we carefully considered both design and maintenance from the outset. Every element, from plant selection to irrigation, was tailored to suit the site’s specific conditions and support long-term success.

Plant Selection for Visibility

Low-growing species were chosen to maintain clear sight lines for security cameras and reduce obstructions

Safe Maintenance Access

Planters on higher levels were pre-assembled and positioned to allow safe, easy access for ongoing upkeep.

Long-term Planting Resilience

Shade-tolerant species and a moisture-controlled irrigation system were used to support healthy, year-round growth

Integrated Irrigation

A concealed irrigation system with moisture control was installed to deliver precise watering, supporting healthy growth and reducing long-term maintenance needs.

Impact

The living wall has transformed a previously unused lightwell into a calming green space that adds lasting value to the home. Its benefits are both visual and environmental, offering year-round greenery while supporting biodiversity and wellbeing.

Enhanced Views

Visible from the kitchen and office, the wall adds a striking natural feature to everyday spaces.

Biodiversity Boost

The planting provides microhabitats for insects and invertebrates, supporting urban ecosystems.

Year-round Greenery

Evergreen, shade-tolerant species ensure lasting visual interest in all seasons.

Improved Wellbeing

The calming presence of greenery creates a more relaxing and enjoyable home environment.
