Project overview
We collaborated with Waltham Forest Council to deliver vibrant and biodiverse rain gardens in the Leytonstone ward by the nearby train station to help enhance the public realm and improve local climate resilience.

Goal
Working with the local borough the aim of the project was to create an enhanced and more accessible public realm with vibrant biodiverse greenery and open spaces. By delivering SuDS as part of the scheme, the rain gardens would help improve local flood resilience to prevent surface water flooding.

Scope
Our role in the urban greening initiative was to clear, plant and mulch two rain garden sites in an area opposite Leytonstone Station. The sites are 37 sqm and 29 sqm, equalling 66 sqm of SuDS integration. We planted 350 hardy and pollinator-friendly plants across the gardens.

Solutions
Integrated Rain Gardens
Natural Granite Features
Ecologically Rich Planting Scheme
Improved Public Realm

Impact
The rain gardens capture and manage heavy rainfall, helping prevent surface water flooding in a busy urban area. They support urban wildlife and pollinators through rich, seasonal planting, enhancing local biodiversity. By introducing greenery and acting as an ecological buffer, the gardens also help mitigate poor air quality by the nearby train station and support climate resilience. Additionally, the transformed streetscape offers a welcoming, nature-rich public realm for both residents and commuters.
