Project overview

As part of Waltham Forest’s wider Lea Bridge Area scheme, Meristem Design have completed a series of urban greening improvements across the Markhouse Corner area to enhance the public realm and improve climate resilience. From new rain gardens to residential planting, this project has helped create a greener, cleaner and healthier area for residents and local businesses.

Goal

To improve the look and feel of the spaces around Markhouse Corner in Lea Bridge. The schemes aims were to add more plants, attract and encourage biodiversity, create more flood-resilient spots and to make the area more visually appealing for the local community.

Image

Scope

Meristem Design’s collaborative project with Waltham Forest included over 200m2 of rain garden installation and planting, with the addition of three Stockholm tree pits. The multi-phase initiative also incorporated around 80m2 of biodiverse planting in the residential garden of Barker House. Over 2000 plants were planted by our team across the areas.

Challenges

Initially the ground at Barker House was very compacted and solid, causing difficulty for the team. This required a lot of time removing previous outgrown and dying grass turf and rotavating the entire planting site to ensure successful planting and growth.

Solutions

Meristem delivered a set of urban greening improvements to the areas around Markhouse Corner including rain gardens, pedestrian-friendly green spaces and vibrant, biodiverse residential planting.

Integrated Rain Gardens

We planted over 200m2 of SuDS around the Markhouse Corner area improving local flood and climate resilience.

Biodiverse Planting

Over 2000 pollinator friendly and hardy plants were used throughout the spaces to bring vibrancy and create biodiversity hotspots within the urban area.

Pedestrian-friendly Spaces

The space around the existing Clock landmark was enhanced, creating a safer and more pedestrian-friendly landscaped area.

Residential Improvements

Improved the front of Barker House with 80m² of planting, providing vibrant screening and a softer, greener edge for residents.
