Flood proofing community apartments: Furrows Place residential SuDS Planters

Meristem Design collaborated with the Furrows Place Leaseholders’ Association to design, fabricate, deliver and install five bespoke SuDS planters in the apartment building. The owners of the space came together to fund the project and bring flood resilience to the residential cul-de-sac.

Our approach was tailored to the needs of the leaseholder association. We worked around the constraints of the existing buildings and drainage infrastructure to integrate a retrofit solution that suited the Furrows Place community.

Stakeholder Consultation

We worked closely with the client to carry out site visits, plans and photographs to refine the planters' design and positioning

Rainwater Management

Existing downpipes were modified to direct rainwater into the SuDS planters while retaining access to existing drainage gullies for future maintenance

Bespoke Design

Planter dimensions and installation methods were adapted to suit the available space

Tailored Planting

The planting scheme was designed to bring vibrance and resilience to the space and included fragrant, flowering plants and low-maintenance hardy species

The completed project provide a practical way of managing rainwater while creating an attractive biodiverse outdoor space in the residential setting.

Reduced Flood Risk

The planters capture and manage runoff from building downpipes in areas that had previously experienced flooding

Greener Residential Spaces

Flowering and fragrant planting adds colour, texture and seasonal interest to the exterior of the buildings

A Long-Term Solution

The planters provide an ongoing way of managing rainwater runoff while requiring minimal intervention once established

A Successful Collaboration

The project was well received by the Leaseholders' Association who were pleased with both the finished installation and the team's delivery
