Building Greener Schools: Lambeth Schools Seed Growing Workshops

As part of the green screen programme with Lambeth Council, we delivered seed growing workshops at schools across the borough after installing green screens. The workshops gave pupils a hands-on introduction to seed growing, from selecting and planting seeds, learning about germination and understanding the care needed for successful growth.

The sessions also explored the importance of plants in improving the environment to help pupils to connect to wider greening activities outside of school too.

The workshops were designed around practical skills and vital environmental education, giving pupils the opportunity to get hands-on and engaged in their green spaces.

Hands-on Seed Growing

Pupils were able to select and plant their own seeds, giving them direct experience and autonomy of plant growth

Understanding how Plants Grow

Through practical activities and a lesson on germination, the children were able to learn about the plants and care needed for successful plant growth

Wide Seed Selection

By providing a range of seeds, children were able to choose the species they'd like to grow, giving them more autonomy and connection to the project

Green Screen Installation

Planting seeds in the green screen planter spaces helped to create an even greater impact on the school ground and allow children to help build their green spaces

The workshops provided pupils with an opportunity to build a direct connection with nature through growing and caring for plants in their schools.

Practical Environmental Learning

Pupils gained first-hand experience of planting and caring for seeds, bringing plant learning into their curriculum

Greater Connection with Nature

The sessions gave the children an opportunity to interact with the natural world in an urban space where they might not have previously had the opportunity to do so

A Better Understanding of the Role of Plants

The sessions were designed to be primarily educational to inform students of the importance and necessity of plants, especially in urban environments

A Bigger Green Impact

By combining seed planting with green screen installation, we brought more greenery into the space to create a bigger and more dense impact
