Boosting restaurants with al fresco dining : Light on the Common hospitality parklet

Meristem Design worked to deliver a hospitality parklet outside Light on the Common on Wimbledon high street. The project originally made up part of Merton’s borough-wide parklet scheme which was introduced to support local businesses recovering from the pandemic by creating additional outdoor seating capacity along public spaces.

We designed, installed and upgraded a previous parklet installation to reflect the restaurant’s branding and create a more recognisable space along the high street

The 10m x 1.8m parklet occupies two former parking bays directly outside the restaurant. It features four integrated benches, two tables and three open compartments that can be used flexibly by the restaurant for tables and chairs or standing space. The structure was painted in Light on the Common’s yellow and green branding and includes prominent signage including reflective red and white traffic markings for visibility.

The parklet was designed to give local hospitality businesses a boost by providing a flexible extension of the restaurant while remaining visually impactful and cohesive with its surroundings.

Flexible Seating

Incorporated four built-in benches and two tables across dedicated seating compartments with additional open sections that allow for teh restaurant to adapt the space as they wish

Branded Design

Used Light on the Common's yellow and green colour palette and large branded panels to create a distinctive feature that reflects the identity of the business

Street Safety

Integrated prominent red and white reflective traffic markings and signage to increase the visibility of the parklet to passing vehicles

Integrated Greenery

Each wall of the parklet featured planters which we planted with a vibrant colour scheme and various textures to bring additional character to the high street and restaurant

This hospitality parklet provides Light on the Common with additional outdoor space and greenery while contributing to Merton Council’s original ambition to support hospitality businesses and create more vibrant high streets.

Al Fresco Dining

Created additional space for customers to dine al fresco and spend time outside the traditional indoor restaurant setting

Local Character

The bespoke colours and branding integrate the parklet with both the restaurant and the vibrant character of Wimbledon Village and high street

Business Boost

The additional capacity allowed the restaurant to seat more people and therefore generate more business, helping them recover after covid operations restrictions

Carbon Offset

The integrated greenery not only creates a nice barrier that separates diners from the road but it also contributes to a higher particulate capture rate, helping to offset the impact of carbon matter in the area
