Liphook School SuDS Planter

Tailored SuDS for flood proof schools: Liphook School SuDS Planter

We collaborated with Refolo Landscape Architects to deliver a large-scale SuDS planter at Liphook Primary School for Hampshire County Council. The installation aimed to address issues with surface water flooding by combine sustainable drainage with planting to introduce additional greenery into the school environment while helping to manage rainfall.

The scheme included the design, fabrication, installation and planting of a 3.4m galvanised steel SuDS planter, designed to be durable and functional. The planting scheme was tailored to incorporate both ornamental grasses and evergreen perennials to create texture, structure and long-term interest.

Stipa tenuissima
Carex 'Ice Dance'
Carex Oshimensis 'Evergold'

We designed a SuDS planter, tailored to the needs and attenuation requirements of the school to effectively improve surface water management in the space. The planting scheme was designed to suit the light levels and microclimate of the space.

Large-Scale Planter Solution

We designed a 3.4m SuDS planter to capture and slow a large amount of runoff from the school roof

Durable Finish

Galvanised steel with a powder-coated finish provides a robust and long-lasting structure that can endure weathering events and wear from daily playground use

Textured Planting

A mix of species including grasses and perennials introduces foliage, texture, form and movement

Modified Downpipes

Holes were placed into the gutter connected to the downpipe, allowing for water to fall through to the plants below during periods of heavy rainfall

The installation introduces a specialised SuDS feature tailored to support surface water management while enhancing the school's outdoor environment and green factor.

Flood Resilience

The SuDS planter provides an additional measure to help manage surface water at the school affected by flooding

The planted feature introduces greenery into the school grounds

Long-term Accessibility

The planter helps flood proof the school, meaning pupils and teachers can more easily access the playground during periods of heavy rainfall
