Milton Keynes SuDS planters

Improving Flood Resilience – SuDS Planters for Milton Keynes
Client
Milton Keynes City Council
Location

Project overview

Milton Keynes has faced persistent flooding issues due to heavy rainfall overwhelming local drainage networks. In response, a flood mitigation program led by Milton Keynes City Council has been launched to address these challenges. As part of this initiative, SuDS planters were installed throughout Coffee Hall, a flood-prone estate, to improve water management, reduce pressure on drainage systems, and enhance the area’s flood resilience.

Goal

The project aimed to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall and localized flooding in Coffee Hall by implementing Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) planters. These planters are designed to collect, store, and manage rainwater sustainably, providing a resilient solution to flooding while enhancing the local environment.

Scope

The SuDS planter installation targeted key locations across Coffee Hall including a local primary school, youth centre and various other residential and community spaces.

Solutions

SuDS planters were installed to provide an effective, sustainable solution

Water Collection and Management

Planters capture rooftop runoff and act as rain gardens in a confined structure, storing water and releasing it slowly into the ground or drainage network

Drainage System Support

By absorbing and managing rainwater locally, the planters alleviate pressure on the piped drainage system

Biodiversity and Aesthetics

The planters incorporate vegetation that not only manages water but also enhances urban greenery and supports local ecosystems

Community Integration

The planters were strategically installed around schools, youth centres, and residential areas to provide both functional and aesthetic benefits

Impact

The SuDS planters significantly improve flood resilience in Coffee Hall, including

Cold Harbour C of E Primary School

Positioned to manage rainwater from the school’s rooftops and surrounding areas, protecting the school from flooding

Community Youth Centre

Installed to manage runoff while creating a green, welcoming environment for visitors and staff

Residential Properties and Public Spaces

Addressing localised flooding in homes and shared spaces, reducing strain on local drainage networks

Vegetation Integration

Supporting biodiversity by incorporating plants that absorb rainwater and improve the area’s aesthetics
