Project overview
Meristem Design supplied large 6m SuDS Planters to be installed at Great Park Academy in Newcastle. Designed and fabricated by the team, our sustainable drainage systems will effectively mitigate flooding on the school grounds and boost local biodiversity.

Goal
To build and supply effective timber plants to be strategically placed in a school academy grounds to capture roof runoff and improve aesthetics.

Scope
Large timber SuDS planters reaching 6.5m filled with a shingle and a SuDS soil mix to be placed at three locations both south and north east facing. Meristem Design also selected hardy, pollinator friendly and drought-tolerant plant species to be planted in the systems.

Solutions
Meristem fabricated these planters with sustainably sourced timber to create these extra long SuDS Planters, ensuring longevity. Planted with shingle and SuDS soil to enhance water retention, the sustainable drainage systems are now filled with approximately 450 hardy, drought tolerant plants.
Partial shade plants include:
- Hosta
- Heuchera plum pudding
- Stipa Tenuissima Pony Tails
South facing sun plants include:
- Calamagrotis Karl Forester
- Salvia Nem Caradona
- Verbena

Impact
Our SuDS planters help manage surface water and manage rooftop runoff sustainably, particularly in urban areas such as Great Park Academy’s school site. Creating greener spaces, the new SuDS planters help boost biodiversity, attracting important pollinators and delivering brighter areas for pupils, teachers and visitors.
