Project overview
Meristem Design collaborated with Camden Council to reimagine Phoenix Road, introducing greenery, large timber planters, and benches to make the space greener, safer, healthier and more enlivened. The aspiration to create a vibrant and biodiverse environment is at the heart of the project. Phoenix Road is transformed into a shared green space where people can relax, play, and socialise.
Goal
To enhance Phoenix Road and create a dynamic space for the community, providing an inviting, safe, and accessible area that honours Somers Town’s identity. Camden Council aimed to create an inclusive environment that encourages social interaction, provides safer travel routes, and supports biodiversity.
Scope
Large sets of colourful timber planters and benches filled with a diverse range of plants and Hydrorock to enhance water retention.
Solutions
We filled the colourful street furniture with Hydrorock, an innovative approach that replaces traditional shingle with a more efficient and sustainable option, enhancing the water retention and management capabilities of our planters.
By incorporating an integrated approach, our planter design encourages an inclusive and welcoming space, promoting accessibility and a connection with nature.
The durable materials used in our planters and benches enhances longevity while the planting scheme creates all year interest while attracting local wildlife.
Impact
Integrating the planters has created a stunning green route, linking Euston and St Pancras International Stations. Reflecting the heritage and unique character of the area, the street furniture filled with lush greenery helps improve air quality and encourages local people to spend more time outdoors.
