Project overview
Since 2018, Meristem Design have been invited to both RHS Chelsea and RHS Hampton Court Flower shows to design and install living walls around the show grounds, including the main event stage.
Goal
Each year, the brief from RHS slightly changes depending on that year’s theme or focus. However, we always aim to create visually appealing green and lush living walls that both inspire and delight event attendees.
Scope
To design and install large living walls to be used throughout the show grounds and act as a showcase on the main stage.
Solutions
Each year, depending on the brief, we carefully select a variety of plant species that thrive in shady environments and are well known for their lovely beauty and lush foliage.
For 2024, with a legendary DJ headlining the evening stage at RHS Chelsea for the first time, we wanted to ensure that our walls were as bright and beautiful as ever, including the uplifting and bold RHS Chelsea purple hues. The creation was brought to life by our very own Living Wall Designer Nina:
‘My inspiration for this year’s design began just a few minutes from my home at Warwick Gardens, where I noticed the stunning Lavandula stoechas blooming among other plants. The living wall features a diverse array of green foliage, dotted with lush ferns and vibrant flowers.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project is participating in the installation. It’s an incredible experience to be surrounded by a fantastic team brimming with energy and enthusiasm.’
Impact
The RHS Flower Shows are not only a celebration of horticulture but also an opportunity to promote the importance of green spaces, environmental sustainability, and the benefits of reconnecting with nature. It serves as a platform for gardeners, designers, and enthusiasts to share their knowledge, exchange ideas, and inspire others to create beautiful and sustainable outdoor spaces.
Our Living Wall exemplifies the principles of biophilic design, which seeks to reconnect people with nature in built environments. The presence of greenery and natural elements enhances the overall well-being and productivity of individuals, creating a sense of calm and tranquillity. Our living wall at RHS Hampton Court and Chelsea beautifully illustrates how biophilic design can transform spaces into rejuvenating sanctuaries.
Our living walls also provide many ecological and environmental benefits including air purification, encouraging biodiversity and having very low water consumption.
Following the end of 2024’s show, all plants used within the living walls were repurposed as part of our primary school project work to educate and engage children on the importance of nature. This will help to reduce waste and help deliver our commitment to fostering an environmentally conscious generation.
