Project overview

Meristem Design rolled out a number of bike and cargo bike parklets in the Hackney area, including at Mentmore Terrace, next to London Fields Overground station. The parklets combine planters filled with native plants alongside secure bike racks, enhancing both the London cycling experience and urban green space.

Goal

To create multipurpose parklets that promote cycling, provide extra cycle storage spaces and improve street aesthetics.

Scope

Each parklet is also home to 6 planters, filled with a variety of plants and bulbs. Each planter is also topped with an upper railing, offering further space for bikes to be locked.

Challenges

The primary consideration was to design parklets that fit compactly within the area’s busy streets while remaining functional for both cyclists and pedestrians.

Solutions

Finding footpaths, pavement and other areas suitable for bike storage can be very difficult so our Parklets provide the perfect cycle storage solution, reclaiming on street parking spaces for active travel, contributing to improved air quality.

We have also installed cargo bike parking which is easily identified from regular bike parking with the use of graphic icons. Cargo bike usage is ever-increasing for both commercial use and personal use with Hackney also having recently launched a cargo bike hire scheme. These Parklets feature a lower mounting bracket which means that users can simply use a regular bike lock to lock their cargo bike safely. The Parklets are available with ramps and a whole host of other accessories to support users including graphics, signage and other modular designs.

Impact

The parklets are situated outside The Fisheries, a community driven coworking space in a 200 year old renovated warehouse, promoting a sustainable working environment. The parklets will provide an increased number of safe locations to lock bikes belonging to those both working there and commuting through London Fields station, as well as cargo bikes used by parents or small businesses in the area.

Filled with a diverse range of plants, the parklets and planters attract pollinators and bring some natural colour to Mentmore terrace. A variety of both perennials and evergreens will provide structure and greenery all year round.
