Creating a Greener Public Realm: Custom Planters and Seating for Saltash
Client
Saltash Town Council
Location

Project overview

As part of Saltash Town Council’s vision to enhance leisure and community interest in the town centre, Meristem designed and installed a range of bespoke planters and street furniture.

Goal

The project aimed to offset “out of town” shopping  by drawing attention back to the high street. Increasing footfall and time spent in the town centre by expanding tree canopy cover, magnifying street-level green areas and restoring vibrance was a key objective of this initiative.

Image

Scope

Spanning the length of Fore Street, we installed a variety of custom planters with seating features, an array of plant types and tree planters. The tree planters were installed to support existing trees along the high street.

Solutions

To support Saltash’s foresight of a greener, more populated high street, we provided tailored infrastructure to meet these needs. Bespoke planters with round seating and bench features were designed and installed along Fore Street to create a more welcoming space for residents to rest while visiting the town centre. The planters were branded with black and gold colours and featured signage and text to narrate the towns history. Two of these planters were further adapted to support existing trees and increase canopy cover.

A range of plants were selected to enhance visual interest and improve air quality such as:

  • Calluna Vulgaris Heather
  • Carex Prairie Fire – Orange New Zealand Sedge
  • Mentha Spicata Spearmint
  • Clematis Montana
  • Griselinia Littoralis

Impact

This project improved the visual appeal of Fore Street through the addition of our custom planters and greenery. This produced a positive impact that brought about an enhanced local interest in the area, resulting in increased pedestrian traffic, a boost in atmosphere and more footfall for town centre-based businesses.

Visual Interest

Greenery, bold planters and signage now decorate the high street, increasing its visual appeal.

Public Comfort

The round seating and bench features provide resting spaces along the high street, encouraging residents to sit and spend more time locally.

Footfall Increase

By enhancing the visual interest and comfort factor, residents were encouraged to visit the high street and contribute to local businesses.

Green Space Enhancement

The wide array of plants and tree-supporting planters increased biodiversity and maintained the council's vision of tree canopy cover.
