St Peter's Nature Garden for London Clean Air Initiative

Redesigning an engaging and climate resilient school garden space for St Peter's Primary

Working with the London Clean Air Initiative, we transformed the garden of St Peter’s Primary School in Westminster into an interactive, flood-ready green space. By removing worn down and dysfunctional features from the garden and replacing them with bespoke SuDS and user-centred infrastructure, the space has become much greener, safer and healthier for the school children using it.

In line with the London Clean Air Initiative, the project aimed to create an engaging, educational and climate resilient space for students, teachers and the surrounding community. The garden was previously neglected and didn’t meet the needs of the school, so we set out to replace the tired infrastructure to provide better education opportunities and create a more pleasant space for pupils to spend time.

Our approach consisted of multiple smaller interventions. To address the school’s concerns for pupil’s safety and access to outdoor space, our main priority was cleaning up and replacing old and disused features in the garden with the following:

SuDS Features for St Peter's Nature Garden

Included a SuDS planter in the redesign of this nature garden to better equip the school with handling excess surface water

Interactive Elements

Designed and installed a cloud board to complement the SuDS planter alongside a timber worktop and stepping stones to engage students in outdoor learning

Pond Repurposing

Emptied a disused pond and filled it with new plants and soil to provide refreshed planted space

Timber Benches

Designed, fabricated and installed timber benches into the garden to create seating areas and enhance accessibility

The infrastructure that we implemented contributed to a safer and more interactive space for pupils and teachers to enjoy. Incorporating greenery throughout has made the garden more immersive, visually interesting and attractive to both students and wildlife.

Enhances Safety and Accessibility

Bench features, the relining of the area and pond infill has removed trip hazards and means that students can enjoy the space with less supervision and safety precautions

Improved Wellbeing

An increase in greenery and planting spaces enhances the garden, making it a calmer and more pleasant space for teachers and pupils to spend time in

Increased Climate Resilience

The addition of SuDS and planted features make the space much better equipped to handle rainfall and promote cleaner air in the garden
