Project overview

We partnered with the Wesley Hotel Euston to bring their visions of a commemorative community garden to life. The project was a charity- funded tribute to a cherished colleague and a part of the hotel’s sustainability commitment to create an environment that cares for the people and for the planet.

Goal

The Wesley Hotel set out to create a welcoming, sheltered green space where guests and the local community can relax and enjoy nature. Filled with plants and designed to support biodiversity, the space aimed to reflect  the hotel’s sustainability commitment and to honour their late colleague. By bringing greenery into an urban setting, the project’s goal was to provide a peaceful place for connection and relaxation.

Scope

Meristem designed and installed a series of bespoke planters to create the sheltered green space. The works included timber planters, a centrepiece planter and a range of plants chosen to enhance biodiversity, aesthetics and provide consistent interest. Hanging baskets were also implemented onto the exterior of the hotel, featuring a range of vibrant flowers.

Solutions

Our approach was centred around bringing greenery and the outside into a semi-sheltered space in a way that was both practical and visually elevated. Using green infrastructure and carefully selected planting, we created a garden that felt welcoming and attractive. We used hanging baskets to soften and freshen up the building, adding seasonal colour and extending greenery into the public realm. A strategic selection of plant life was used:

  • Fargesia robusta ‘Campbell’
  • Photinia x fraseri
  • Sarcococca confusa
  • Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald Gaiety’
  • Carex ‘Everest’
  • Polystichum setiferum
  • Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’
  • Hedera Helix
  • Aucuba japonica

Bespoke Timber Planters

5 planters varying in size were installed to frame the space and provide support for plants and guests, some doubling up as seating.

A Circular Centrepiece Planter

Introduced as a focal point, this planter added visual interest and balanced out the space.

Seasonal and Sensory Planting

Plants were selected by colour, texture and biodiversity, ensuring consistent visual interest.

Hanging Baskets

Installed along with vibrant flowers, these planters gave the exterior of the building a fresh new look, creating a more welcoming atmosphere for guests.
