As School Streets continue to gain momentum across the UK, our team is heading to the School Streets North conference 2026 in Liverpool to join the conversation on creating safer, greener routes to school. Having exhibited at School Streets South for many years, Meristem are excited to be heading up North on the 13th May to discuss designing and delivering child-friendly spaces in and around UK schools.

What is a School Street?

School streets are localised schemes that use traffic calming measures, greenery and street layout changes to enhance the school run. Some techniques we've previously incorporated into school streets include custom planters, rain gardens and cycle parking to encourage active travel and healthier routes to schools.

The impact of School Streets:

School Streets are proving to be an effective way to reshape the school run and improve the surrounding environment. At our Kennington Oval project in Lambeth, vehicle traffic was reduced by 39%, creating a safer, calmer space for pupils and their families. Results like this highlight how we can better design our schools to have meaningful and measurable impacts on school journeys.

The event will feature leading experts from local authorities, academic institutions, design companies and community groups coming together to talk about how we can make streets better for our schools and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Our director, Habib will be speaking on the session 3 panel: A multi-pronged approach to behaviour change, exploring how changes to our landscapes can influence children's and parents' experiences with the school run.
