Project overview
As part of a wider initiative to green Blackpool’s town centre, Meristem partnered with Blackpool Council to design and install bespoke planters and street furniture across multiple locations. The new green infrastructure enhances biodiversity, improves air quality, and creates more attractive and welcoming streetscapes. Click here to read about Phase 2 of the Scheme.

Goal
The urban greening project aimed to enhance public open spaces, creating greener streetscapes and making the town centre healthier, more attractive and sustainable for residents and visitors to the coastal area.

Scope
Across multiple sites in Blackpool Town Centre, including outside the Imax and along Topping Street, we installed custom planters with seating, benches and large tree planters to enhance the streetscape. We also installed planters onto existing seating across the town to brighten up the urban look and feel.

Solutions
To support Blackpool’s wider greening and regeneration goals, we delivered tailored green infrastructure through the installation of bright, custom-designed planters and street furniture. This bespoke infrastructure includes tree planters, pollinator-friendly planting schemes and durable seating elements to transform the town centre’s public open spaces into greener, more welcoming environments. Designed with resilience in mind, the installations use stainless steel and powder-coated finishes to withstand the harsh coastal conditions, and feature Hydrorock technology to support sustainable water management.
Plants include:
- Griselinia littoralis
- Brachyglottis compacta
- Salvia ‘Amistad’
- Salvia x jamensis
- rosmarinus prostratus
- Verbena bonariensis ‘Lollipop
- pittosporum tobira
- Seslaria Autumnalis
- Libertia Grandiflora
- Trailing ivy

Impact
The introduction of green infrastructure will improve both the environmental and social quality of Blackpool’s town centre. Streets like Topping Street and areas outside the IMAX have been visibly transformed into greener, more attractive space. The planting will enrich biodiversity by creating habitats for pollinators and urban wildlife, while the enhanced streetscapes boost visual aesthetics. These improvements contribute to a more livable and climate-resilient town centre for Blackpool’s residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
