Project overview
Cairo Place, located in the heart of Walthamstow Central, has been transformed from a hard-paved carriageway junction into a lively public space within the Walthamstow Cultural Quarter. As part of the wider public realm improvements linked to the renovation of Soho Theatre Walthamstow, the site was redesigned to prioritise community use and greener streets.
Working alongside Publica and the London Borough of Waltham Forest, Meristem Design installed, planted and now maintain the rain gardens, pollinator planting and drought-tolerant grasses that bring seasonal interest and ecological value to the space. Since installation, our team has continued to care for the site, ensuring its long-term success as a biodiverse, resilient and welcoming neighbourhood asset.
Goal
To convert an underused junction into a green, social and culturally active public realm that supports walking and cycling, improves safety, integrates Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) and enhances biodiversity while creating a vibrant community setting.
Scope
The Cairo Place public realm project includes SuDS rain gardens and planting beds that feature drought-tolerant and pollinator-friendly species. Meristem Design also helped support with community planting days.

Rain gardens for sustainable drainage
Meristem Design installed large rain garden beds that manage stormwater runoff and naturally irrigate the planting, helping to reduce pressure on the sewer network.
Resilient planting palette
Hardy, drought-tolerant grasses and pollinator-rich species were selected to thrive in challenging urban conditions while boosting biodiversity and providing dynamic seasonal plant displays.
Integration with public realm features
The rain gardens frame new terrazzo seating and playful elements - connecting the natural landscape with the design vision for a culturally active space.
Long-term maintenance
Since installation, Meristem Design has continued to maintain the rain gardens, ensuring healthy plant establishment and that the rain gardens are functional and effective.

Cairo Place now delivers ecological, cultural and social value – transforming a once hard, overlooked junction into a resilient green space that supports biodiversity, community life and long-term sustainability.
