Project overview

As part of the wider Cally Liveable Neighbourhood project, Islington Council is transforming streets and public spaces in the Caledonian Ward to create a greener, healthier, and more welcoming borough. Freeling Street East was identified as a key location to form part of a new green corridor of pocket parks and greening measures, connecting residents with community spaces and improving the look and feel of the street.

Meristem Design delivered new rain gardens and planting that help make Freeling Street climate resilient while creating a more inviting place for local people to meet, play, and enjoy.

Goal

To transform Freeling Street into a vibrant, vehicle-free public space that improves pedestrian safety, absorbs rainwater through sustainable planting, and contributes to a wider green corridor within The Cally.

Scope

The Freeling Street East public realm improvement works include the creation of 100m² rain gardens, Planting of over 700 resilient plants, New trees, planting beds, and mulching. The project is part of a wider contribution to the green corridor vision of The Cally Liveable Neighbourhoods.

Solutions

Freeling Street has been transformed with rain gardens, new planting, and public realm features that bring resilience, biodiversity, and beauty to the street, while contributing to Islington’s network of liveable neighbourhoods. The scheme combines sustainable drainage with placemaking, providing planting, seating, and greening that supports both climate resilience and community use.

Rain Gardens for Climate Resilience

100m² of rain gardens absorb rainwater and improve drainage. Planted with hardy shrubs, grasses, and perennials, they bring year-round interest and resilience.

Biodiverse Planting Palette

Over 700 plants were chosen to support pollinators and create a rich mix of texture, colour, and seasonal change.

New Public Realm Features

Playful elements and new seating encourage local people to spend more time outdoors, with spaces designed to be welcoming for all ages.

Connecting the Green Corridor

The project contributes to a continuous green link through The Cally, connecting residents with community buildings, nearby green spaces, and improved walking and cycling routes.

Impact

The Freeling Street works are part of Islington’s ambition to create a borough-wide network of liveable neighbourhoods, reducing reliance on cars, tackling air pollution, and creating greener, healthier streets. The new green corridor at Freeling Street supports climate resilience, improves biodiversity, and creates a safer, healthier public space for the community to enjoy.
