Transforming school grounds with SuDS Planters: United Utilities Manchester programme

Across Greater Manchester, Meristem Design partnered with United Utilities to deliver a series of SuDS planter installations in 12 schools – transforming hard, impermeable playgrounds into greener, more functional educational environments.

As part of a wider initiative to improve water management and inspire the next generation, what were once grey tarmac spaces are now vibrant areas that manage rainwater, support biodiversity and provide opportunities for outdoor learning and engagement.

The SuDS planters are designed to capture, store and slowly release rainwater, reducing runoff while supporting healthy planting. By combining water management with thoughtful planting design and decorative features, the scheme creates spaces that are both functional and engaging for schools.

SuDS Planter systems

Planters are designed to intercept rainfall and manage water at source, reducing pressure on drainage systems while making use of rainwater to support planting.

Planting for sun and shade

A carefully selected mix of species ensures the planters perform in a range of conditions - from shade-tolerant planting such as ferns, hostas and groundcovers, to sun-loving species like lavender, salvia and rosemary.

Biodiversity & sensory value

The planting palette includes grasses, flowering perennials and aromatic herbs, creating seasonal interest while supporting pollinators and sensory interaction for pupils.

Integrated water efficiency

Each school received a water audit, helping identify leaks and reduce water use - supporting both environmental goals and cost savings.

Across the 12 schools, the SuDS planters have delivered both environmental and educational benefits – turning underused and urban playgrounds into greener, more resilient spaces.

Reduced surface water runoff

The planters help manage rainfall more naturally, reducing pooling and improving drainage across playgrounds.
