Newham LTN Rain Gardens

Transforming streets through SuDS: Newham LTN Rain Gardens

Across the borough of Newham, we have planted a network of rain gardens that are transforming streets – turning former Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) interventions into permanent, green infrastructure. What began as temporary traffic-calming measures using planters has evolved into a coordinated programme of SuDS rain gardens that improve flood resilience, air quality and the everyday experience of streets.

Delivered in partnership with Newham Council, these schemes form part of a wider “people-friendly streets” approach – prioritising walking, cycling and community use while integrating nature-based solutions into the urban spaces.

Key sites across the programme include Keogh Road and Osborne Road, alongside additional streets such as Ash Road, Station Road and Aldworth Road – each contributing to a connected network of greener, safer neighbourhoods.
