Project overview

Meristem Design helped brighten up the Sonning Common village hall and slowed surface water runoff by designing and installing custom SuDS planters for Sonning Common Parish Council. The installation was followed by a planting day led by the local village gardeners.

Goal

Ahead of the council’s environmental strategy launch, they were looking to slow surface water runoff and alleviate pressure on the public drainage system. Additionally, the council are particularly interested in combating the decline in pollinator species. Our SuDS planters were tailored to address both of these issues.

Scope

Two timber SuDS planters were installed outside the village hall in the centre of the village. They were placed strategically as to avoid hatches in the ground and connected to two drainpipes extending from the building. Members of the local community were involved in the planting and maintenance of the planters.

Solutions

Our timber SuDS planters were implemented to provide a range of environmental solutions and acted as a prompt for increased community spirit.

Drainpipe Connection

The two planters are connected to two drainpipes that extend off the building, catching excess rainwater and filtering it through the soil.

Pollinator-Friendly Plant Scheme

A range of pollinator-friendly plants were chosen with the intention of attracting pollinator insects and in-turn, revitalising the ecosystem.

Community Planting

Volunteers from the village helped plant the planters.

Height Suitability

The height of the planters provided easier access to the local community who previously struggled reaching the low-down plant pots that were outside the village.

Impact

The intervention provided by Meristem resulted in a range of social and environmental benefits, addressing the concerns of the council and local community.

Slowed Rainwater Runoff

Connecting the drainpipes to the planters and increasing the permeable surface area through soil helps manage water runoff by increasing absorption and slowing drainage.

Biodiversity Boost

The introduction of a new planting scheme has enhanced local diversity around the village hall and encouraged pollinators to populate and sustain the plants.

Community Feel

The introduction of these SuDS planters has provided a space for the community to come together and maintain.

Visual Enhancement

The placement and planting scheme of these SuDS planters has provided a visual focal point to the village hall and brightened up its exterior.
